All is because of a fish
The beginning of the electrical stimulation start from the Second Century BC, a man got an electrical shock from a electric ray, but coincidently healed his joint pain. Since then, ancient man start to use the electricity on the patients to heal rheumatism and demented.
It was not until the 18th century, did Galvani used the frog test to find the electricity within animals` body which is called “bioelectricity”
In the following 200 years, human beings have kept making progress in neuromuscular electrical stimulation area, and made quite a lot progress on how different current and frequency will influence human’s body, but at that time, they still could not solve the confliction between the effective and comfort.
Current NMES techniques
In 1982, the USA FDA officially announced that it is safe and effective to use NMES under circumstances as followed:
1. to heal the disused muscle atrophy
2. to improve and maintain the joint`s ROM
3. To improve the muscle ability and mobility
Moreover, the NMES has other physiological effects:
1.to relieve the muscle spasm
2. to recover the nero control over the muscle
3.to improve the healthy muscle strength
4. to substitute for disused organ or limbs
It was not till 1980s, did people find the best solution which could meet the safety, comfort and effectiveness requirements.
