At 2:30 pm of July 31, Dr. Bob Chen, Mo Jianbang and Chen Jixiang, representing Dr. Chen’s STaR Studio, walked into Li Ning’s Beijing headquarters, the Li Ning Sports Science Research Center. The spacious floor is covered with advanced biomechanical research equipment. Dr. Chen’s STaR Studio attended the conference for research into the Li Ning brand “Stride Transition” midfoot running shoes as a third-party research institution, and attracted much attention and participation of people in related fields.
The conference started with a brief introduction by Dr. Zhang Dewen from the Research Department of the Li Ning Company, and he talked about how the Li Ning Company had improved runners’ running sensation through scientific technology, in which he demonstrated the soft and hard power in technology of Li Ning running shoes. Li Ning’s research team also conducted biomechanical tests for the runners on the spot. For example, they pasted reflex points on a runner’s joints, then took pictures of his running posture, then simulated a human body model through computer calculation, and finally projected this on the screen. Through this, every subtle change of motion structure can be seen, including the degree of changes in the ankle’s overpronation and underpronation, the biomechanical meaning of different running postures, and the explanation for heel running and midfoot running. It is worth noting that people with different arches have different emphasis on shoe selection. For example, during running, those who land on their heels first need shoes with good cushioning and shock absorption function in the heels; those who land on their midfoot first need shoes with good protection in the middle, like the latest technology of Li Ning “Stride Transition” midfoot running shoes.
For this brand new research product, the designer of the “Stride Transition” midfoot running shoes has demonstrated its innovative technology content through data. “The function of the shoes determines the designing style of the shoes,” and that is the new message the designer has conveyed to us. Everyday shoes basically pursue the external appearance, but the designer of “Stride Transition” midfoot running shoes believes that the style should come from scientific data analysis. For example, inside the midsole of the” Stride Transition” midfoot running shoes, there is a “3” shaped pattern, which is obtained by analyzing large amounts of data.
As a third-party professional research organization, Dr. Chen’s STaR Studio has reported the research achievements of the “Stride Transition” midfoot running shoes. Through data, it confirms that use of midfoot running shoes, and the wide spread of the technology, will alleviate or even eliminate injuries resulting from running. Within six months in 2014, Dr. Chen’s STaR Studio has gathered a database and analysis of this research with 42 runners.
We equipped these 42 runners with “Stride Transition” midfoot running shoes. After running 5 km training sessions nine times at the Beijing Olympic Forest Park, the runners have mastered the midfoot running techniques. Afterwards, we obtained the comparative results by collecting data, which showed that almost all had significant improvement. These are the two most significant changes:
1. The time for the pain to appear during running was postponed. They discovered that by using Li Ning “Stride Transition” midfoot running shoes and midfoot running techniques, overall, each runner’s time for the pain to appear was noticeably postponed.
2. Data shows that the sensation of pain decreases from 4 minutes to 2 minutes.
This “Stride Transition” midfoot running shoes and midfoot running technique research event was the first collaboration of Dr. Chen’s STaR Studio with the Li Ning Company’s biomechanical research. Through this experience, they hoped to integrate rigorous scientific research ideas into Dr. Chen’s STaR Studio’s corporate culture of “enhancing service standards through research, innovation and training.” We hope to promote physical rehabilitation services to a broader population.
