Ningbo Mountain Marathon: Dr, Chen’s STaR Studio Came to Ningbo to Assist the Ningbo Mountain Marathon for the First Time!2014-06-20 11:19:56 From:Dr. Bob Chen's STaR Studio
On May 10, Dr. Chen was invited to the Ningbo Mountain Marathon “Training Camp” to teach. While more and more runners gained scientific knowledge about running, they were also aware of the importance of healthy running and scientific fitness. The host granted everyone’s wishes, and invited Dr. Chen’s Rehabilitation Team to provide services for the 2014 “Run for the Love” Ningbo (Jiangbei Area) Mountain Marathon.
This time, Dr. Chen’s STaR Studio, working together with the Chinese Athletes Educational Foundation, sent two of their physical rehabilitation specialists and 8 “Whampoa Third Term” trainees of the Chinese Athletes Educational Foundation Physical Rehabilitation Training Class to participate in the marathon service, which included three groups: full course, half course, and mini course.
On that day, before the whistle blew at the Northern Mountain trail of Jiangbei Area, Coach Qu had already started to lead the warm-up activities with runners. After the competition, the team members gathered everyone to do the final stretching and relaxing activities, and also conducted one-on-one stretching and sports injury consulting services, just like when treating professional sports teams.
During this period, the “Whampoa Third Term” trainees conducted more detailed research about the mountain marathon running by inviting participant to complete questionnaires. Questions dealt with exercises before and after running, whether they had injuries, differences before and after stretching, choices of running shoes, running motivation, benefits brought from running, and so on. They learned more about the existing problems that mountain marathon runners had.
During the eight-hour service, the small team of ten members of Dr. Chen’s STaR Studio not only provided services such as stretching and things to watch out for with mountain marathon for more than three hundred runners, but also completed nearly three hundred valid questionnaires with volunteers.
By conducting personal services and exchanges with athletes on the spot, we learned that among many long distance runners in this competition, many of them had never participated in any marathon competitions before. It started to rain unexpectedly in the middle of the competition, which made the mountain road slippery and muddy. Many of them slipped and fell because they did not choose the right shoes for mountain roads. Some runners did not understand the importance of stretching and doing other preparatory activities prior to running. Some did not understand their own injuries, and blindly did preparatory activities for mountain marathon that led to premature fatigue, cramping and other problems during the competition. There were also some athletes who did not realize that running mountain marathon would require 1.5 times more physical ability than a road marathon. Thus, they experienced low blood sugar, dizziness, and other symptoms after the competition.
After running between mountain streams and enjoying the pleasure that exercise and nature had brought to them, everyone really started to understand what Dr. Bob Chen meant when he said, “Running mountain marathon is definitely more interesting than running a regular marathon, but it also requires greater physical quality, fitness and tactics. Mountain marathon has more unknown risks that need to be guarded against.” Now, Dr. Chen’s Physical Rehabilitation Team hopes that through their efforts, more runners will focus their attention on the belief of “Healthy running and scientific fitness.”
